About our Alpaca Farm
Alpacas of Carrickalinga share a farm with Canyon Creek Ranch (husband and wife respectively; Ian Watt and Marilynn Scoggins) in a delightful valley setting east of Highway 1 and only a few short miles from the mighty and beautiful Pacific Ocean and the old fishing port of Morro Bay on the central coast of California.
The farm is an old dairy of some 14 acres set alongside a year-round creek and is home to two alpaca herds as well as 400 avocado trees, a stunning pond and old English-style garden featuring tall, graceful trees, cottage garden, palms, lawns and a half-acre pond with catch-and-release bass, all overlooked from a shady raised wooden patio set alongside a small fountain pond.
It is truly a delightful setting for a quiet glass of wine and barbequed Australian lamb chops, good company and scintillating conversation!
Alpacas of Carrickalinga (named after a small coastal town in South Australia from whence came Ian) is a small herd devoted to breeding by objective measurement for elite fleece traits without an emphasis on color. Ian operates a consulting company and provides the only OFDA 2000 fiber testing service in the USA as well as the first skin biopsy testing service for alpaca breeders.
Ian has been involved in alpacas since 1991m and is actively involved in the development of the US industry through a directorship in AOBA after a term as affiliate President in SoCalpaca.
Marilynn's herd is focused on breeding superior grey and black alpacas and is using objective measurements as part of the breeding strategy.
Marilynn has been involved in several positions in SoCalpaca, has been the regional representative on the Alpaca Western Extravaganza show and is a volunteer with the Alpaca Research Foundation.
